Philip and Nathanael

The Old testament tells us about what the Jews believed in the very early days, thousands of years before Jesus was born. Many of their prophets said that one day someone very special would come from God to lead them. After Philip met Jesus he was sure that he had found the man that God had sent. He was very excited and went to find Nathanael.

At first Nathanael did not know if what Philip said was right. He said, "Surely someone so important could not have come from such a small and unimportant place as Nazareth." Philip said, "Come and see for yourself."

Jesus saw Nathanael coming and said, "Behold! Here is an Israelite who has nothing false in him." Nathanael said, How can it be that you know me?" Jesus said, "Before Philip called you, you were sitting under the fig tree and I saw you there."

Nathanael was amazed. He knew that Jesus must be someone very special. He said, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel."

Jesus said, "You have believed in me because I told you I could see you under the fig tree. You will see many things happen which are greater than this."
